Backstreet Boys Announce Plans For Massive North American Summer Tour
Source:

DATE: MARCH 12, 2001

FROM: MARCEE RONDAN/MITCH SCHNEIDER/TODD BRODGINSKI

BACKSTREET BOYS ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR MASSIVE NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR:
THE TREK THE FANS DEMANDED

Following an array of sold-out and critically acclaimed shows across the country that began January 22 in support of the eight-times platinum BLACK & BLUE album, BACKSTREET BOYS are standing true to their word that its all about the fans.

After speaking to our fans, theyve told us they want to see us up close and personal, said the groups AJ McLEAN. They want to get as close to us as they can and we intend on giving them exactly what they want.

After an extensive amount of e-mails, as well as personal interaction through their intimate fan conferences (where BACKSTREET BOYS meet with fans in a press conference scenario), the group have decided this is the way the fans want to see them.

With 50 more North American arena shows set to launch in June with opener Shaggy--the biggest ever concert tour staged in arenas--NICK CARTER, HOWIE DOROUGH, BRIAN LITTRELL, AJ McLEAN and KEVIN RICHARDSON will keep up the maximum bonding experience. As their current tour has progressed, BACKSTREET BOYS have seen the benefits of their production which gives them closer access to their audience.

The fans have told is they want to get as close as possible to us and when we put this tour together, we worked with the set designer to find ways for us to be near our fans during the show, said HOWIE.

The production features awe-inspiring pyrotechnics, a multi-level stage and multiple video screens as well as side runways that go ten rows into the arena, enabling the group to get even closer to the audience. It is a multi-media presentation with innovative sound, lights and interactive video footage that intensifies the bond between BACKSTREET BOYS and the fans.

We want to give our fans the best concert experience ever, KEVIN said. And we think that by bringing Shaggy out as a special guest, fans will really get their moneys worth.

Prior to the second leg of North American dates, BACKSTREET BOYS will play to sold-out crowds in Mexico, South American and Puerto Rico.

Here are some quotes that praise both the BACKSTREET BOYS performance and production:

Dan Aquilante, NEW YORK POST: The opening number was a no-hold-barred, gee-whiz spectacle during which the band performing under a barrage of indoor fireworks that rained from the raftersbetween the infectious dance pop, precise hoofing and terrific staging, the show was good entertainment that titillated but never ventured into risque. This is a band that works at its craft, and their efforts show in concert.

Jim Farber, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: the fivesome offered an expertly crafted piece of popthree quarters of their 21-song show, which runs an hour and 40 minutes, centered on mid-paced material with killer choruses.

Frank Scheck, BILLBOARD.COM: The massive set, featuring a giant bridge that descends from above to traverse nearly the entire length of the arena, is so spectacular and efficient that it suggests whoever is designing their stage show should start working immediately on New York Citys infrastructuretheres no denying that Backstreet Boys are working very hard with their current tour to ensure that their rabid fans, most of whom attend with their parents, have a great timethe show--with its in-your-face pyrotechnics, elaborate video displays, myriad dancers and flashy set design--is designed to mesmerize even the shortest of attention spans. And once again, the Boys demonstrate that they really can sing and that their material includes some of the catchiest pop songs of the past decadethe show is a fast-paced affair that takes care to balance the ballads with the funky dance numbers.

Mark Brown, ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS (Denver, CO): an intricate light show, pristine sound, Grammy-caliber presentation and enough fireworks to make Kiss blushand everything the fans come for was there. All the hits were served up early and often, from Larger Than Life to I Want It That Way. The harmonies were impeccablethe staging was spectacular

Gene Stout, SEATTLE POST: The Backstreet Boys returned to the Northwest with a bang last night. A big bangin a production worthy of a George Lucas sci-fi blockbuster, the teen-pop supergroup entered an asteroid-pelted stage enveloped in stage fog and suited up in black trench coatsit was a fast-paced, even dazzling show..

Marty Hughley, THE OREGONIAN (Portland, OR): with wings that swept smoothly all the way up to the edge of the stands, (the stage) was designed for visibility.

Greg Kot, CHICAGO TRIBUNE: the moments the black-and-blue kids will be talking about this week are those when Brian, Nick, Kevin, A.J., and Howie D. floated tantalizingly close, appearing on a riser behind the sound board in the middle of the audience, strolling over the floor on a bridge, working the wings of the stage to clasp hands or accept gifts.

Monica L. Haynes, POST-GAZETTE (Pittsburgh): the boys sang, danced, strutted, sweated and horsed around amid pyrotechnics and decibel levels that surely exceeded the limits of auditory health.

Andrea Berninger, THE FORUM (Fargo, ND): The groups song and dance revue was a fast-moving, class act. The quintets voices sounded crispFrom any spot in the arena, it was easy to see the boys on stage or on one of three video screens.

Greg Glasgow, THE DAILY CAMERA (Boulder, CO): The high production values of boy band concerts are no longer surprising, but they are still impressive. Tuesdays show began with an outer space-themed video, flaming comets soaring across the stage and, finally, the arrival of the Boys, who rose from the stage on smoking pillars in front of geysers of flame and sparksbacked by a seven-piece band and accompanied at times by five male and five female dancers, the Boys continued with a show well balanced between ballads (I Want It That Way, Grammy-nominated Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely) and uptempo dance numbers (Get Another Boyfriend, The Call) featuring impressive precision choreographythe band and the dancers kept things interesting while the group was offstagegood use was made of a multi-level stage full of staircases and airplane wing-like runways

Jane Yuan, EASTSIDE JOURNAL (Seattle): One word: amazing. The Backstreet Boys gave an incredible performance at the Tacoma Dome Sunday night. The concert was packed full of fireworks, special effects, hot dance moves and body-movin musicthirteen year-olds Rebecca Thompson, Whitney Carter, Ruthie Lipshulch and Ailsa Weisnewsk from Bellevue have been to two other Backstreet Boys concerts before this one. They said they really liked the special effects and the video screen. They felt that the Backstreet Boys were closer, more in touch with the audience, more sincere and mature compared to their other performances.

Which Band Is This Again?

The slick Backstreet Boys show lacks originality, but that's beside the point.

By ROBERT HILBURN, Times Pop Music Critic

It was only fitting that the Backstreet Boys moved into Staples Center Wednesday on the heels of the latest World Wrestling Federation spectacular.

Both shows fuel youthful fantasies.

With the WWF, boys, mostly 8 to 15, are fascinated by seeing action heroes in the flesh rather than simply on their TV sets. With the Backstreet Boys, the hearts of girls the same age flutter at the sight of their dreamboats in person.

"I Luv U Nick," declared a banner waved proudly by a teenager in the audience at the Backstreet Boys concert, summarizing the core appeal of the boy groups that have been a commercial sensation in pop in recent years.

You could substitute Brian, Kevin, Howie or A.J. for Nick on the banner in the case of the Backstreet Boys, or Chris, Lance, J.C., Justin or Joey in the case of the more lighthearted 'N Sync--and the tune is the same. In fact, an 8-year-old in my row Wednesday insisted that the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync were the same band--and it's not a bad perception.

If you're not part of the target audience, chances are the music will strike you as pretty uneventful.

After a half-hour, the show was so numbing that you had your own fantasy: staging the WWF and the Backstreet Boys on the same bill so Stone Cold Steve Austin could race out and body slam A.J. during the dull "Shining Star," or Lovely Lita could dropkick Howie across the stage during some equally sappy number. Anything to bring some spontaneity or adventure to a show that is as slick as a freshly waxed floor.

The group didn't show a lot of personality, but the members were unpretentious enough, thanking the young fans repeatedly for their loyalty. The quintet also dazzled the crowd with lots of visual extras, including countless explosions, a busload of dancers, a disappearing act and more ramps (to bring the Boys closer to the fans) than the Harbor Freeway.

It was all pretty much standard stuff for veteran concert-goers, but we're not dealing with longtime KISS fans here. The youngsters loved it. This was a night when you needed earplugs more as protection from the screams than the music from the stage.

Regarding the music, the Boys--whose ages run from early to late 20s--take turns on lead vocals, and they are all creditable singers, though none stands out in a way that makes you think: great solo career ahead.

The songs are mostly melodramatic tales of romantic desire that are built around melodies and pop or R&B arrangements so commonplace they could have been lifted from a sale table at a 99 Cents Only store. The exception is the zesty, hook-heavy "I Want It That Way," one of the few genuine pop delights to have emerged from the teen pop boom.

The best thing was watching the audience--not just the young, innocent fans screaming for their heroes, but also the parents who got to share this special moment with their kids.

Thanks to the sweetness of the audience, the Backstreet experience wasn't as bad as I had feared--but that's only like saying the Novocain shot at the dentist's office didn't hurt as much as expected.

The bad news for parents is that the Boys (who were scheduled to play a second show Thursday at Staples) are headed back here this summer, which means all the little girls are going to start begging to go again. Sitting through another two hours of this music is the real test of parental love.

3-28-01: More tickets set for release on Saturday (3/31).

by Jon Zahlaway

LiveDaily Staff Writer

update: Backstreet Boys have added a number of shows to their upcoming summer North American tour, shuffled others and set on-sale dates for tickets to many of the outing's stops.

Tickets to nine of the shows go on sale this weekend, according to tour promoter SFX Entertainment. Details appear in the itinerary below.

Strong ticket sales for shows that hit the box office last Saturday (3/24) have resulted in a handful of multi-night stands. The group's previously announced July 9 engagement in Boston has now been extended to a three-night run, and second nights have also been added to the tour's stops in Toronto and Calgary.

The dates for the group's previously planned June stops in Indianapolis, Lexington, Ky., and Pittsburgh have been shuffled, and will now take place on June 20, 21 and 26, respectively.

Other newly added dates include an August 16 stop at Los Angeles' Great Western Forum, an Aug. 18 stop near San Bernardino, Calif., and an Aug. 26 stop in St. Louis.

Previously announced stops in Columbus, Ohio, on June 24 and Little Rock, Ark., on Sept. 1 have been dropped from the latest itinerary, according to SFX.

[Note: The following tour itinerary has been provided by artist and/or tour sources, who verify its accuracy as of 27-Mar-2001. Changes may occur before tickets go on sale. Check with official artist web sites, ticketing sources and venues for late updates.

(Katrillion) -- Here's your chance to get your face seen by the Backstreet Boys!

What's more fun than taking photos with I-Zone's sticker camera? How about taking pics of you and your friends and sticking them on a giant billboard that will be delivered to the Backstreet Boys. Powder your nose, and read on.

I-Zone Instant Pocket Camera is the official sponsor of BSB's summer tour. That means the company will make special black and blue cameras, including a BSB strap and stickers of the guys, which will be available in stores this June.

The best part is, in select tour cities, cameras will be handed out for you to take pictures before Backstreet hits the stage with their usual show opener, "Everyone." You then get to plop your photo on a billboard that will be given to the band.

"We're very excited to once again join forces with the Backstreet Boys for their summer tour," said Terry Carlson, a Polaroid veep, in a statement. The company previously sponsored the "Millennium" tour.

Backstreet's summer tour bonanza kicks off June 8 in Orlando.

I have some very sad news to report. A.J. lost his grandmother two days before the Kids' Choice Awards. That's why he didn't attend with the rest the fellas. I know how A.J. feels because I lost my grandmother in 1995. Even though I wasn't reallie close to her, I felt so heartbroken. I can still remember the day I found out that she was sick. I felt so numb and helpless. My heart goes out to you A.J. and ur family in this tragic event. If you would like to send in ur condolences, please e-mail me something and I'll send it in to their fan club.

4-27-01: As you may all know BSB did a live webcast of their concert in Mexico on SFX.com. So far there is only a live press conference, but no footage of the concert. I will keep you posted on it as it comes available.

BB say no to Bee Gees
Source: Toronto Sun

By JANE STEVENSON -- Toronto Sun

Not even the Bee Gees could get the Backstreet Boys to record Sacred Trust, which they specifically wrote for the uber boy band. Instead, the tune ended up on the Bee Gees' new album, This Is Where I Came In, released this week.

"The Backstreet Boys actually loved (it)," says Robin Gibb, who will appear on A&E's Live By Request tonight (9-11 p.m.) with brothers Barry and Maurice. "But they don't choose their own material, the producers do. And they write their own material, and the producers write material for the band. They get a bigger piece of the pie if they just keep writing material. So it's a kind of closed shop for anybody to get in to write a Backstreet Boys song."

Gibb says that, in addition to being a fan of both the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC -- "I like good singers, boy bands or otherwise," -- he also favours such U.K. acts as Manic Street Preachers, Oasis and Blur, and various black artists.

"I think black artists are still coming up with the most innovative forms of expression, say in terms of blues," he says.

As for tonight's A&E special, Gibb says they'll be performing four or five new songs, along with taking requests.

"You can't rehearse everything that might be asked for, nor will we be able to do everything everyone asks for."
